From the CO2Science archive: Japanese larch is a larch and is from Japan, making it one of the rare cases in the plant world where the name matches the origin. It is a conifer but is also deciduous, turning golden in the fall rather than staying evergreen. It is a hardy, fast-growing tree that adapts well to other climates (including Canada) and thus far has avoided the common fate of being hailed as a successful transplant only to be slandered soon thereafter as an invasive pest. In 2005 and 2007 there were four experiments that showed an additional 300 ppm CO2 boosted the growth of Japanese larch by 26.8 percent. So plant one of these nice trees in your backyard and then do it a favour by idling your truck an extra few minutes.
