Dry weight biomass in willow with extra CO2 in the air

05 Feb 2025 | Science Notes

From the CO2Science archive: In honor of the discovery that Salix jiangsuensis or willow somehow grew in Central Greenland over 250,000 years ago, when the island was completely ice free despite CO2 being 35% lower than today, we note that between 2012 and 2015 there were five experiments exposing willow cuttings to an extra 300 ppm of CO2, and the result was they grew an extra 26%. So if ever the ice cap melts again willow will return triumphantly to the green lands of Greenland, bigger and better from all the extra CO2 we give it.
