CDN by the Sea: Adak, Alaska

22 Jun 2022 | Science Notes

The westernmost municipality in Alaska is so far west it’s almost in Russia. It would be in tomorrow if not for a jog in the International Date Line. And like all little island settlements it must contend with the horrors of rising sea levels. At least it would if they were rising. Instead at Adak they are falling at a rate of about 2 mm per year. Which means in 487 years the sea level will be a meter lower than it is now.

At this rate it will still take a long time for the land bridge across the Bering Strait to reopen, and when it does unfortunately there won’t be any Woolly Mammoths left to walk across it. But still it would be cool to be able to go by snowmobile to Siberia.

  1. What is the deal with the blurry charts in the articles on your website? Checkout the difference for the chart for "CDN by the Sea: Tromso Norway" on June 1st to the one for "CDN by the sea: Kigiliah, Russia" on June 8th. All charts in your website articles since June 1st are blurry. But the charts that you embed in your email newsletter are not blurry.
