From the CO2Science archive: With continued wallops of winter storms it is too early for us to do more than pine for Spring, but when the blessed relief arrives one of the first fruits we will look for is the sweet cherry, or Prunus avium (L.) L. And if your cherries seem a little sweeter and more abundant than before, you know what to thank. As reported at CO2Science, from 1994 to 1999 there were eight experiments that found, on average, that an extra 300 parts per million CO2 in the air boosted cherry growth by nearly 60 percent. So bake your cherry pies in a natural-gas-powered oven and it will be win-win all around.
