  • From the “you can’t make it up” file, California’s green governor Gavin Newsom just signed an executive order commanding energy prices to fall and ordering state agencies to think of things he couldn’t because they’re so obvious, murmuring the incantation “We’re taking action to address rising electricity costs and save consumers money on their bills. California is proving that we can address affordability concerns as we continue our world-leading efforts to combat the climate crisis.” Right. Which is exactly why you’re making a failed effort to address affordability concerns as your energy system crumbles.
  • Former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell’s brief tenure famously ended when she led her party to disaster, going from majority status to two seats out of 295 in Parliament, losing even her own seat, resulting eventually in her party ceasing to exist. If that sounds like your idea of a climate expert you’re in luck because you can hire her to speak on the topic “We’re already in World War III: Examining the social & political dimensions of climate change”. You will discover that “Climate change has come to be recognized globally as one of the most serious challenges facing our planet…. Campbell helps explain the effects of climate change on people, and offers insight into the actions that will be necessary in order to save cultures, lifestyles and lives.” For a fee of course.
  • Smart people in the big cities know that climate change is destroying agriculture. Meanwhile the yokels over at the Ontario publication Farmer’s Forum, who clearly need to spend less time outdoors looking at crops and more time indoors looking at computers, just wrote that “As combines began to roll across the corn fields of Southwestern Ontario, growers quickly realized that they were witnessing unsurpassed yields — in specific pockets on the farm.” Specifically those growing corn, which apparently didn’t get the memo about storms, droughts and floods and instead mistakenly believed “the quality was excellent with good weather conditions.” There were worries that the corn harvest was so good the residue of stalks might hurt next year’s soybean crop. But with farming there’s always something, and it sure doesn’t sound like climate change around here. At least not the bad kind, with old-timers reporting that their yields are double what they were back in the good old 1970s.
  • Two researchers hired by the Australian government to say the weather is bad and getting worse and it’s our fault say the weather is bad and getting worse and it’s our fault and that it will keep getting worse for centuries even if we stop being evil because we’re so evil. Indeed, in The Conversation they write “Earth’s climate will keep changing long after humanity hits net-zero emissions. Our research shows why”. Gosh, we could have saved you the trouble. It’s because the Earth’s climate has always changed since long before humanity had any emissions. Thank you. Send the grant to CDN. P.S. They also say since Net Zero is futile we must get there at all costs. (“Despite the unknowns, one thing is very clear: there is a pressing need to push for net-zero emissions as fast as possible.”) QED.
  • Turns out black plastic products are often made from recycled electronic waste. And according to one Andrew Turner, a biochemist at the University of Plymouth, they contain “concerning levels of flame retardants” and are “particularly crucial to avoid”. We confess that we would not be surprised to find out that recycling e-waste in response to government directives creates new and more deadly hazards than any potential ones associated simply with landfilling it. And at much higher cost. It’s the sort of problem we should be spending more time considering instead of thinking plant food is a global flame accelerant.
