From the CO2 Science.org archive: Yes, Jatropha curcas is popularly known as Purging Nut, and if you’re thinking it might be better not to swallow such a thing, yes, the oil from its seeds is a strong laxative. Mind you it also shows promise as a source of biodiesel and even jet fuel. And because while native to the American tropics it is capable of growing in desert conditions and in low quality soils, so it has been introduced around the world including in Myanmar where the socialist military dictatorship, excited with the prospect of becoming self-sufficient in jet fuel, ordered landowners to plant it or face imprisonment. Unfortunately the junta didn’t build a plant to process Jatropha curcas nuts into biodiesel so the seeds went to waste and, what with the land having been diverted away from food production, people starved and the whole episode ended up as a fiasco, as always happens under socialism. But we digress. The point is, from 2013 to 2017 there were seven experiments showing an extra 300 ppm CO2 boosted Purging Nut growth by an average of 93.4 percent. So whichever use you plan to put it to, we can expect to have a lot more Purging Nut available in the years ahead. Just don’t replace your food crops with it in haste.
