The effects of extra CO2 on Sheep Fescue

26 Nov 2025 | Science Notes

From the CO2Science archive: Festuca ovina L. or Sheep Fescue is a hardy grass that grows widely in rangeland and meadow areas. Technically it is not the same as Meadow Fescue, nor Small, Tall, Red or Tall Meadow Fescues and, weirdly, sheep apparently don’t much like Sheep Fescue, and cattle and horses stay clear of the stuff. Nevertheless if you think you can find a use for it, and among others golf course designers often do to add to mankind’s woes, it will continue to thrive in the years ahead. From 1991 to 1997 there were six experiments which showed an extra 300 ppm CO2 resulted in an average growth boost of 47.7 percent.
