The effect of extra CO2 on Darwin Woollybutt

08 Oct 2025 | Science Notes

From the CO2Science archive: Whoever’s job it is to come up with these names really needs to lay off the booze. Even the Latin name is a mouthful: Eucalyptus miniata Cunn. ex Schauer. But the common name for this Australian tree sounds like a Simpsons phone prank where Moe ends up shouting about seeing Darwin Woollybutt. However this week’s named-after-three-fingers-of-hooch plant is remarkable for another reason: it is the first case we have ever seen where extra CO2 actually made it grow less quickly. In 1994 in a set of nine experiments the additional CO2 caused the butt to grow more woolly in six cases but less quickly in three. In one the growth slowed by 38%, resulting in an overall average of -2% across the nine experiments. So if it keeps up there will eventually be less and less of the Darwin Woollybutt to kick around. P.S. If we ask viewers in Australia to send pictures of same, we trust they will not misunderstand.
